According to Marianne O'Donoghue, MD, a dermatologist at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, United States, causes the appearance of dark circles on the eyes is because the eyes are too tired, allergies, excessive sun exposure, menstruation and pregnancy.

O'Donoghue also reveals genetic factors influence the emergence of the eye circles. If your parents have dark circles on the eyes, you probably also will experience it.

Sometimes dark circles around the eyes are not the blackened skin, but blood vessels. Because the skin layer of the eye is very thin, the blood vessels can be visible and give the impression of black circles. The circle will be seen more clearly for those who have light skin.

O'Donoghue expressed usually dark circles under the eyes caused by hyperpigmentation, i.e. a higher melanin levels than average. Melanin is the substance that gives color pigment in the skin.

To prevent and minimize dark circles in the eye, there are two things you can do.

Use a skin moisturizer that contains SPF (sun protection formula) on under eye circles, at least SPF 15 but its better if it contains SPF 20. You use every day when you leave the house, to protect the skin around the eyes from the sun.

2. Powder and foundation with sun protection
Choose the foundation and face powder which also contains an SPF of 6 to 8. "Layered protection would be better for the skin around the eyes since its structure is very thin," said Dr. O'Donoghue.
